Originally scheduled to hit screens last month, Sanam Saeed and Shaz Khan’s highly anticipated sports drama, The Martial Artist, finally has a release date.
The film’s release was postponed due to the devastating wildfires in Los Angeles. Now, the film is set to make its grand debut this spring for an Eid Ul Fitr 2025 release.
The Martial Artist follows the journey of a Pakistani-American MMA fighter who reconnects with his roots to overcome the challenges weighing him down. The film delves into themes of ambition, identity, and redemption, offering a fresh perspective on the world of mixed martial arts (MMA).
Speaking about the inspiration behind the story, Shaz Khan, who not only stars in the film but also directed and co-wrote it, shared,
The thought for this story came ten years ago from a short film I did about a boxer. So I extended that and incorporated a part of Pakistan into it.
Teasing the plot further, he added, “Since he’s a martial artist, he wants to be the best in the world. That’s his dream. But some stuff happens to him, which sends him on the wrong path. So he meets his Dada (paternal grandfather), who is played brilliantly by Faran Tahir.”
The film boasts an impressive cast, including Shaz Khan, Sanam Saeed, Faran Tahir, and Babar Peerzada. Known for his roles in Yaqeen Ka Safar and Parwaaz Hai Junoon, Shaz Khan takes on the dual role of actor and director.
What makes The Martial Artist particularly groundbreaking is that it marks the first international-level English-language film featuring four lead actors from Pakistan.
Shaz Khan underwent rigorous training to prepare for his role, working with MMA champion Rafael Cordeiro in California.
In an Instagram post, Khan shared his admiration for the sport and its athletes, saying, “I hope to humanize the fighters and the often misunderstood sport, which is a true combination of science and art.” He added, “The fighters are humble with an insatiable appetite to grow and have hearts as big as their will.”
