Airport Worker in Dubai Faces Deportation for Stealing 2 Mangoes

in a case that might throw light on the punishment not fitting the crime, a Dubai airport worker was fined and now risks being deported from UAE for stealing two mangoes from one of the luggage bags he handled.

The luggage worker at Dubai International Airport was responsible for loading travelers’ luggage onto the conveyor belt from the container and vice versa. On August, 11, 2017 he stole mangoes from a fruit box that was to be shipped to India.

In his confession note to the police, the accused said that he was thirsty and looking for water.

Later in April 2018, the police summoned him for questioning. The police arrested the airport worker and searched his place but no stolen items had been found. With no evidence, the accused was let off during the time.

Now a year later, a security officer claims that he saw the worker on a warehouse CCTV camera, opening the travelers’ luggage and stealing two mangoes.

Consequently, the luggage worker was sentenced to a suspended three-month jail term for stealing two mangoes from the baggage of a passenger.

The Court of First Instance sentenced the 27-year-old Indian worker to ‘deportation after paying a Dh5,000 fine, for stealing two mangoes worth about Dh6 on August 11, 2017.

During interrogation and prosecution investigation, the accused public employee revealed that he had been working at Terminal 3 of the airport. The worker has the right to appeal the verdict within 15 days.
