Better late than never, as Bollywood bigwigs join Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) protests after a long silence on most social issues. Last night, it was none other than Deepika Padukone who made a surprising decision to join the JNU protests days before the release of her film Chhapaak.

Many people from Bollywood joined the protested on Monday. From filmmakers and writers to actors like Deepika Padukone.

Fans and other people alike are lauding the actor’s bravery of going up against the state’s bigots. This show of support has consequences though. Pundits say that it will definitely affect ticket sales to Chhappak, which has been produced by the actress herself.

Others thanked her for speaking up when she’s in the position to do so.

Soon enough #ISupportDeepika and #boycottchhapaak were trending in India. BJP Bhakhts are designating the BNU students as ‘anti-nationalist’ and alleged that all those who support them fall in the same category.

Things went as far as creating a conspiracy involving Pakistan Army and Deepika Padukone.

Others called it a publicity stunt. They pointed out Deepika Padukone’s silence on a similar incident when police were beating up Kashmiri students.

While speaking to a local media outlet the Padmavaat actress also voiced that this was a proud moment for her.

“I feel proud that we are not scared. I think to be able to express ourselves. I think the fact we are thinking about this and about the future of our country,”

Oddly like much of Bollywood the actress has been dead-silent on the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA 2019) protests.

BNU Protests

The BNU protests were orchestrated following an attack on JNU students and teachers by masked suspects. The attackers used sledgehammers, sticks and other makeshift weapons.

The suspects are allegedly linked to a student group backed by the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). That would explain the lack of action on the issue so far.

The attack took place during a university meeting with student leaders regarding a hike in hostel fees.
