Feroze Khan Sues Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy for Smear Campaign

The ‘Habs’ star wants Rs.70 million in damages

Actor Feroze Khan is going after Oscar-winning Pakistani filmmaker Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy for allegedly launching a “smear” campaign against him.

On Thursday, Khan’s legal team sent a notice was sent to her demanding a written apology or a payment of Rs. 70 million in damages. Otherwise, a defamation lawsuit will be filed against her. According to the notice, Sharmeen’s Twitter account tweeted about Feroze Khan being involved in domestic violence. This severely damaged Khan’s credibility, and cost him his money.

The renowned Pakistani filmmaker is one of the celebrity figures who have publicly called out the Habs star on social media after his ex-wife, Aliza Sultan, made allegations of domestic violence against him.

Prior to the legal notice, Feroze Khan wrote to Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy on 16 January, demanding a written apology from the Oscar-winning director, which she rejected the very next day.

According to Feroze Khan’s legal team, Sharmeen had been previously criticized for using power against public figures. The notice mentions such incidents including a time when Sharmeen got a doctor from Agha Khan Hospital fired for simply sending her sister a friend request via social media. Obaid was subsequently criticized by civil society and journalists, as well as international media.

Feroze Khan had not spoken against her, according to the notice. The notice also pointed out that Sharmeen once said she would return the LUX Award she was given due to Feroze Khan’s presence at the award show. However, she has never thought about or discussed returning the Oscar Award.
