Here’s Why DG ISPR Praised Deepika Padukone’s Heroism

The details.

Deepika - DG ISPR

Many lauded Deepika Padukone for standing with the Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) protesters. One of these admirers included none other than the Director-General, Inter-Services Public Relations (DG ISPR), Major General Asif Ghafoor, who called the actress a brave woman for supporting JNU protests.

The Padmavaat actress joined the students of JNU protests in New Delhi and even meet Student President Aishe Ghosh who was among the injured in the JNU attack. People lauded the actress for speaking up days before the release of her film Chhapaak knowing this will affect her ticket sales.

On the other hand, the actress was criticized for standing with ‘anti-nationalists’.

Inadvertently, DG ISPR personally lauding her may have just put a target on her back. Perhaps this is why Major General Asif Ghafoor later deleted his tweet.

Celebrities and JNU Protests

On Sunday January, 5 masked assailants wielding batons and iron rods attacked staff and students at a JNU meeting, leaving over two dozen injured. They even broke into hostels and specifically targeted left-wing students. Not even the visually impaired students were spared.

According to an Indian journalist, the masked mob was linked to a Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP) linked student group.

The meeting that was attacked was meeting regarding the hike in student fees. The hostel’s fee hike has turned into an ongoing issue.
