“Inshallah” is now part of the Duden dictionary

inshallah

One of the most popular and authoritative dictionaries on the German language out there, the Duden dictionary of Germany recently included an Arabic word into the dictionary. The Arabic word is a common Islamic term: “Inshallah” which means “If Allah wills it”.

It is a proud moment for Muslims all around the world and it is about time that the term has finally been included in such a prestigious dictionary.

The word “Insha’Allah” is widely used around the world by the Muslim community.

Though the new entry is spelled as “inschallah” in the Duden dictionary, it is currently unclear whether the word will appear in the Duden’s digital version or published in a physical copy.

A Well-Known Dictionary

The Duden is considered to be the most authoritative and widely used dictionary of the German language; it has long been the prescriptive handbook for German grammar as well as spelling – Often refer to as a German Merriam-Webster of sorts.

The Duden dictionary has been issued since 1880 and is now in its 27th edition.

The inclusion of the word “Insha’Allah” was made after the Turkish word ‘oha’ was added into the dictionary, which also came from the Muslim world. “Oha” is used as an expression of astonishment or surprise which is quite similar to the English word “whoa”.

A Large Muslim Population

At around five million, Germany’s Muslim population is the second-largest Muslim population in Europe followed closely by France that makes up roughly six percent of the country’s population while three in five German Muslims are of Turkish descent.
