Pop star and actress, Selena Gomez has found herself at the center of a social media firestorm after posting—and quickly deleting—a tearful viral video about recent ICE raids targeting undocumented immigrants.
Critics were quick to pounce, accusing the Only Murders in the Building star of being out of touch, overly dramatic, and even ungrateful for the opportunities she’s had in the United States.
In the now-deleted post, Selena lamented the plight of undocumented immigrants, saying, “These are people. Families. Children. They’re being torn apart, and it’s heartbreaking. I can’t just sit here and not say anything.”
Her tearful plea was meant to raise awareness, but instead, it raised eyebrows—and a lot of memes.
One of the most viral responses came from conservative commentator Benny Johnson, who posted a scathing critique on X (formerly Twitter):
“Selena Gomez is American. Her mom is American. Her Mexican father abandoned them. She went from living in this small Texas home to this $5M palace in LA.She’s a billionaire because of America. Yet she does not consider us ‘her people.’ We are over ungrateful woke victim brain rot.”
Another user quipped: “When I’m in a making-things-about-myself competition and Selena Gomez is my opponent.”
Even conservative commentator Tomi Lahren joined the pile-on, tweeting: “Certified moron Selena Gomez crying for criminal illegal aliens is really something else. This is why we don’t take our political advice from Disney child stars.”
And, of course, no Selena controversy would be complete without a Justin Bieber reference. One user wrote:
I now see why Justin Bieber broke up with Selena Gomez.
For now, Selena might want to take a break from Instagram—and maybe invest in a good PR team.
