Is Baaji’s “Badlaan” Similar To Another Punjabi Song?

They do have similar riffs.

baaji Badlaan

Baaji‘s soundtrack has been making waves. Recently, the film makers revealed another track ‘Badlaan’ from the much anticipated film starring Amna Ilyas and Meera. The song’s slow and mellow tone has proven to be a hit with fans, but some eagle eyed listeners say that it may have borrowed elements from another movie.

While everyone loves the emotive track and Zeb Bangish’s soothing voice, older folks have noticed the track’s similarities to ‘Udaai Jaa‘. ‘Udaai Jaa‘ is a song from 1977 Punjabi film Danka. Many feel that Badlaan has a similar ring to it.

A Familiar Situation

It is pertinent to recall a similar controversy surrounding The Legend of Maula Jutt. When due credit is not given, we have controversies like that with Maula Jutt. Even though it has the same characters and storyline from the older Jutt movies, but the updated version is still considered a reboot.

Now film-maker Saqib Malik’s Baaji faces a similar backlash for ‘Badlaan’.  People are mentioning that even the opening lines sound the same. The rift also sounds the same, minus the change in tempo.

The Director’s Response

Director Saqib Malik denies that Badlaan is a remake of ‘Guddi Wangon Aj Mainu Sajna’, or even inspired by the track.

”This one is not a remake at all. The lyrics, for the most part, are new including the tune. Only the main refrain is similar in words (but not the same) as the song mentioned above was ‘Guddi Wangon Aj Mainu Sajna‘ while this one is ‘Badlaan wich Aj Mainu Guddi Wanngon‘. This is a poetic license as it’s a familiar term in Punjabi.”

Remember when Ke$ha and Pitbull’s ‘Timber’ faced a copyright lawsuit for using a similar harmonica riff as Lee Oskar, Keri Oskar, and Greg Errico 1978 track ‘San Francisco Bay‘?

The film-maker told entertainment portal Pakistani Cinema that since the tempos of the tracks as well as the lyrics are different, credit is not due to Danka. He added that Badlaan is an acoustic song.

“Badlaan is a ballad and very soft on the ears because of its acoustic sound, while ‘Udaai Jaa‘ was a much louder song, much heavier in its arrangement as it was created for a filmi Mujra situation.”
