Renowned Indian writer and lyricist Javed Akhtar has once again found himself at the center of a social media storm following a controversial statement about Jannat made during an event.
The viral video clip, which has taken platforms like X by storm, shows Akhtar making lighthearted yet provocative remarks that have sparked outrage.
In the widely circulated video, Akhtar quipped, “There are no bananas or guavas in paradise, which are my favorite fruits.” The audience erupted in laughter, but the humor took a sharper turn when he added, “Those fruits may be in hell, so I never try to go to paradise.”
The remarks, delivered with Akhtar’s characteristic wit, have been perceived by many as flippant and disrespectful, igniting a fierce backlash online.
The clip has spread like wildfire across social media, with users slamming Akhtar for what they see as a mockery of religious beliefs.
One X user commented, “This man ruined his afterlife just to make four people laugh,” encapsulating the sentiment of many who found the statement offensive.
Others have accused Akhtar of trivializing sacred concepts for cheap laughs, with reactions ranging from disappointment to outright condemnation.
This is not the first time Akhtar’s remarks have stirred controversy. Known for his outspoken views and frequent criticism of Pakistan, the writer has a history of polarizing statements.
In a previous appearance on a program, he reportedly said, “Pakistanis tell me I’ll go to hell, and Indians call me a jihadi, saying go to Pakistan. If I have to choose between Pakistan and hell, I’ll choose hell.”
The resurfacing of this older comment alongside the new clip has only intensified the criticism, with many accusing Akhtar of harboring an anti-Pakistan bias.
