Khalil-Ur-Rehman Reveals the Emotional Reason Behind Killing Off Afzal in ‘Pyare Afzal’

The renowned writer shared that he still gets criticized by diehard fans of the show.

Renowned writer and director Khalil-ur-Rehman Qamar finally revealed why he had to kill off the popular character Afzal (played by Hamza Ali Abbasi) from the hit drama serial Pyare Afzal.

During a guest appearance on comedian Vasay Chaudhry’s talk show ‘Gup Shab’, Khalil opened up about the reasoning behind the dramatic plot twist.

Khalil shared the heartfelt motive behind his decision came from an unexpected source – Hamza Ali Abbasi himself. Khalil disclosed that Hamza had requested his character’s death, expressing his desire to remain eternally alive in the hearts of the audience.

Touched by Hamza’s enthusiasm, Khalil decided to comply with the actor’s wish and scripted the tragic fate for the protagonist.

He recounted a touching incident where an elderly woman approached him on a plane and asked, “Why did you kill Afzal?” This incident, he said, highlighted the emotional connection viewers had with the character.

In another anecdote, Khalil reminisced about the screening of the final episode of Pyare Afzal in a cinema. He shared that the emotional impact of the episode left two girls in tears, and Hamza Ali Abbasi advised them to leave the venue to avoid encountering enraged fans.

Afzal’s fate wasn’t the only character demise that Khalil-ur-Rehman Qamar orchestrated. His subsequent drama serial, the immensely popular ‘Mere Pass Tum Ho’, also featured a shocking ending that left audiences astounded and, in some cases, angered by the death of the main character Danish (played by Humayun Saeed).

Khalil-ur-Rehman Qamar’s revelations shed light on the emotional depth and audience connection that his characters evoke. It underscores the power of storytelling to forge lasting connections between viewers and the characters that capture their hearts.
