Messi’s wife posted a poignant note for her husband on her Instagram in Spanish:
We know what you suffered so many years, what you wanted to get. I don’t even know how to start. We feel great pride for you… Thank you Lionel Messi for teaching us to never give up, and to fight till the end. Let’s go Argentina!
Argentina won its third FIFA World Cup by defeating defending champions, France, in the hotly contested final at the Lusail Stadium, in Qatar on Sunday. Lionel Messi led from the front, scoring two crucial goals and playing a key role in the third goal by Angel Di Maria.
However, France fought back, courtesy of a Kylian Mbappe masterclass. He scored a hattrick in the final to blow the roof off the stadium. Ultimately, the South American side won the match in a nail-biting penalty shootout after the game was tied at 3-3.
Celebrations erupted all around the stadium as Messi finally captured football’s biggest prize, much to fans’ joy. The historic moment cemented the Argentinean captain’s status as the undisputed GOAT (Greatest of All Time) of the game.
