Pakistani web series ‘Midsummer Chaos‘ went viral for all the wrong reasons. The tacky characters and the fact it’s named after the horror flick ‘Midsommar’, etc. Yet, the series director Ahmed Saryam states, what he was going for is an ‘organized cringe’.

According to Express Tribune, the teen drama intentionally features superficial characters, a linear narrative, and Western teen drama elements. Apparently, writer/director Ahmed Sarym intended to be this ‘cringe.’ And the fact that we all found it hilarious is a bonus.

As for professionals in the biz that were making jabs at the mini-series, Ahmed Sarym pointed out how drama serials with an entire crew often fail to meet the mark, then why expect so much from an indie project. He has a point.

“It received no financial backing whatsoever since producers thought its story was too risky to invest in, … I really have a problem with the whole series being judged after two episodes.”

He also mentioned how reviewing a series in just two episodes isn’t fair.

“I don’t think there’s any journalistic integrity in passing judgments on something without even watching its conclusion.”

Turns out all that criticism won’t deter him as Ahmed Sarym is intent on bringing forth the best the series has to offer. Particularly its progressive elements. Did you know the series features a trans-actor? Zara Khan plays a psychologist in the series.

Letting an actor be an actor rather than box them into ‘trans roles’ based on their gender identity is something we can definitely appreciate
