Netizens Upset With Noor Bukhari’s Advice to Mahira Khan

The ‘Raees’ star revealed that she has been battling with manic depression for many years.

Former Lollywood actress, Noor Bukhari advised Mahira Khan to “revert back to Allah” after the Raees star revealed she has been living with manic depression for several years.

In a recent episode of Frieha Altaf’s FWhy podcast, Mahira emotionally disclosed her ongoing battle with mental illness. The candid revelation sparked a viral conversation on social media, but it also ignited controversy when fellow actress Noor Bukhari offered religious advice in response.

Netizens did not appreciate Noor’s advice implying that depression is merely due to a lack of faith in Allah.

During the podcast, Mahira Khan spoke openly about her experiences with mental illness and the challenges she had faced.

She revealed that her symptoms had become almost unbearable during a period when she briefly stopped taking her medication last year. Mahira disclosed that she had been living with manic depression for around six or seven years.

While many applauded Mahira for being brave enough to talk about her mental illness, Noor Bukhari took the opportunity to share some advice. She told Mahira that “the soul needs to connect when you are having this kind of feeling; it’s the time to receive the call and change your path.”

This religious advice, offered amidst a conversation about a severe mental health condition, did not sit well with many netizens. Several individuals expressed their discontent, asserting that depression is a serious mental illness requiring proper medical treatment, and medications are often essential for managing its symptoms.

They argued that Noor Bukhari’s commentary failed to acknowledge the complexities of mental health and the importance of professional intervention.

Critics also stressed the significance of recognizing that depression can be as debilitating as physical ailments and can potentially lead to suicidal thoughts or actions in severe cases. They urged individuals to approach mental health issues with empathy and understanding, rather than resorting to religious advice as a one-size-fits-all solution.

Some online users even called for Noor Bukhari to refrain from making controversial statements on social media, suggesting that her tendency to comment harshly in the name of religion could be harmful.

In response to the criticism, Noor Bukhari doubled down on her advice, explaining that she too suffered from depression and it was through Allah that she found her cure.
