For the very first time, the South Waziristan district in Pakistan’s northwestern Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa province has appointed a woman as head of the Education Department. This is a huge step forward for the area which has the lowest female literacy rate in the entire country.

Meet Noor Khadija, an educator who aims to bring every girl from her district to school. Belonging to a family of educators herself, Noor has been a well-respected member for the education department, being associated with them for over ten years.

The motivated educator has finally earned recognition for her time and efforts as she has been appointed as the new head of the Education Department.

This is a crowning achievement for not just Noor but for the district as well. It is the first time in South Waziristan’s history that a woman has held the office for the Education Department.

Speaking to a media outlet, Noor Khadija shared her desire to serve her community, especially the young girls who are missing out on education. The area has been wrecked by militancy and is one of the seven autonomous tribal regions from the Federally Administered Tribal Areas (FATA).

Due to a lack of economic development and neglect, there is disenfranchisement among the population.

Former deputy director in FATA, Muhammad Shoaib Khan believes that Noor’s posting will immensely improve the quality of girls’ education in the district and will provide relief to the female teachers who can now easily communicate issues and problems to her.
