He demands an unconditional apology.

Omair Rana stated if the publications and news coverage regarding the LGS scandal are not removed with an unconditional apology, he will move to the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA).

“For the vindication of my constitutional and human rights and to protect myself. For those who publish and fail to remove libelous material against me with an unconditional apology to me I will be approaching FIA under the Prevention of Electronic Crimes Act.”

The Sang-e-Marmar actor stated that his chain of schools would have adequately addressed issues of sexual harassment had they emerged.

“Sexual harassment is a heinous crime and should be treated with the seriousness that it deserves. At the same time the dignity and respect of individuals must not be falsely tainted. The law provides remedies for all and I intend to take all steps necessary …”

Silencing Victims

One of the reasons many victims of sexual harassment struggle to come forth is because they are not provided an environment conducive to the process. According to the World Health Organization (WHO);

“Sexual violence, including sexual harassment, frequently occurs in institutions assumed to be ‘safe’, such as schools”

Besides dismissing claims assuming educational institutions are safe places, the matter of child abuse is so taboo that people would rather pretend it doesn’t happen. This is true in cases where staff members know of a faculty member’s predatory behavior towards the students, yet do not report the person.

It can take years for child victims of sexual harassment to come forth. According to WHO, child sexual abuse is estimated to be higher, 28% in parts of eastern Europe, the Commonwealth of Independent States, the Asia–Pacific region, and North Africa.

The same study reported that boys are just as affected by this social evil as girls.

Now that all these victims are coming forth on social media, in a way it reflects their lack of trust in a standard policy and legal protocol to help them. Secondary school student Sherine Josal told SCMP that:

“Cancelling someone offers a way for victims of sexual assault or harassment to expose the perpetrators when traditional avenues have failed.”

It has often been argued that reporting matters on social media before regardless of whether people take legal action, is their means of rallying others like themselves to assert they are not alone, so a problem cannot be dismissed as an individual issue.
