About Rani and Its Themes

The film Rani cast an actual transgender artist Kami Sid for the role of a transgender. In the film, Kami Sid essays the role of a transperson who refuses to earn a living in a socially unacceptable way. Rather than becoming a performer like the rest of the trans-community, Rani decides to eck out a respectable living as a laborer.

Director Hammad Rizvi tackled the sensitive topic with care and it shows.

Recently Hammad Rizvi also won the NBC Universal Short Film Award in Los Angeles for the best outstanding writer.

Plot

Rani follows the story of a transperson who is intent on raising an abandoned child, despite the practice being considered a social taboo.

The short film created a lot of hype last year and is not about to slow down anytime soon.
