The Anger against Citizenship Amendment Act

The Citizenship Amendment Act seeks to grant citizenship to non-Muslims from neighboring countries.

Marginalized people from different religions and backgrounds such as Sikhs, Jains, Buddists and Christians, who are from Pakistan or any other country where they face oppression can apply for citizenship in India as per the new law. However, Muslim immigrants are excluded from the new citizenship act.

This has led many people to believe that this new law is in line with the infamous Trump “Muslim Ban” from 2017. US President Trump barred certain Muslim countries from travelling to the United States after he was ushered in as the leader.

Why the Protests?

A country of 1.4 billion people, India is the 2nd most populated country on the planet behind China. It also claims to be among the most culturally diverse countries on the planet.

About 200 million people out of the 1.4 Billion population are Muslims. Which is no small number. In fact, this makes up 15% of the total population of India.

To not include Muslims under the new Citizenship act has struck a nerve with the overall Indian populace and massive protests are underway.
