Prince Harry and Meghan Markle Become Parents to a Baby Girl

And guess who she is named after?

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle welcomed their daughter into the world. The Duke and Duchess of Sussex announced the birth of their second child in a statement on Sunday.

“It is with great joy that Prince Harry and Meghan, The Duke and Duchess of Sussex, welcome their daughter, Lilibet ‘Lili’ Diana Mountbatten-Windsor, to the world,” said the statement.

According to CNN, details of the birth as listed in the statement imply both mother and baby are healthy and both parents elated.

“Lili was born on Friday, June 4 at 11:40 a.m. in the trusted care of the doctors and staff at Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital, … the new arrival weighed in at 7 pounds, 11 ounces (3.49 kilos), … both mother and child are healthy and well, and settling in at home.”

By home the statement means the couple’s home in a private Santa Barbara neighborhood, the Sussexes moved into after stepping down as royals and settling in the United States.

The emancipated royal couple named the baby girl in honor of her grandmother and great-grandmother.

“Lili is named after her great-grandmother, Her Majesty The Queen, whose family nickname is Lilibet. Her middle name, Diana, was chosen to honor her beloved late grandmother, The Princess of Wales,” the statement added.

Back when Prince Harry and Meghan Markle were expecting baby Archie, fans had suggested the couple name the baby Diana if they have a girl. However, they were blessed with Archie Harrison Mountbatten-Windsor instead.

Two-year-old Archie now has a baby sister. While it is not custom for the gender of a royal baby to be revealed before birth, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle had announced they’re expecting a daughter in their tell-all interview with Oprah Winfrey.

In a message on their Archewell foundation website, Meghan and Harry talked about being blessed with a daughter saying;

“She is more than we could have ever imagined, and we remain grateful for the love and prayers we’ve felt from across the globe. Thank you for your continued kindness and support during this very special time for our family.”

Meanwhile, Buckingham Palace also released a statement Sunday on the baby girl’s birth.

“The Queen, The Prince of Wales and The Duchess of Cornwall, and The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge have been informed and are delighted with the news of the birth of a daughter for The Duke and Duchess of Sussex,” said the the Buckingham Palace’s statement.

The US Embassy in London also congratulated the Sussexes, noting the news comes just in time for Father’s Day.
