Robert De Niro, Al Pacino To Reunite For Mobster Flick ‘The Irishman’ [Video]

A return to a winning formula.

Hollywood megastar Robert De Niro goes back to his winning formula with The Irishman. De Niro and others look incredibly young in the trailer.

Netflix dropped the trailer for Martin Scorsese’s long-awaited film, The Irishman. With a stellar director at the helm, this mobster film has an equally stellar line-up with Robert de Niro, Al Pacino and Joe Pesci. They all look surreally younger.

Before you applaud the make-up artist for magically making them younger beyond their years, it’s all been done digitally. The actors’ looks were digitally enhanced to make them look young.

VFX artists used anti-aging digital effects, based on a technology first developed by Industrial Light & Magic, founded by George Lucas (thank you Star Wars).

The number of years erased from 75-year-old De Niro is remarkable. De Niro is made to look decades younger.

The Netflix project is a crime epic. The movie will tell the tale of the powerful union leader Jimmy Hoffa (Pacino), crime boss Russell Bufalino (Pesci) and Frank “The Irishman” Sheeran (De Niro), who claimed he killed more than 25 people on their orders.

The adaptation has been a passion project for Scorsese. The Irishman  is an adaptation of Charles Brandt’s 2004 book ‘I Heard You Paint Houses’. Steven Zaillian adapted the screenplay.

The Tale of The Irishman

Frank Sheeran was a World War II veteran who became a mob hitman for the Bufalino crime family AKA the Italian-American Mafia. The trailer opens up by introducing Frank Sheeran.

The adaptation, which is based on Sheeran’s life, has long been Scorsese’s passion project.

This leads to him meeting the president of the Teamsters,  Jimmy Hoffa. The film follows Frank Sheeran’s descent into The Irishman as Hoffa and Bufalino convince him that things need to be done ‘to change history‘.

“You wanna be a part of this Frank? Would you like to be a part of this history?”

Eventually Frank is converted, and sees the bigger picture that they want him to see.

“You can’t miss the big picture.”

This is the first time that Pacino has worked with Scorsese. Meanwhile, this marks De Niro’s ninth collaboration with the Oscar-winning veteran director.

Martin Scorsese is famed for crime dramas like Goodfellas, Casino, and The Departed. Crime epics are also Robert De Niro’s specialty with hits like The Godfather II, Heat, Goodfellas, Casino, and The Departed.

For a brief span of time, De Niro switched to romantic-comedies with Stardust and Dirty Grandpa.  Its good to see him back to being a mobster. This time he’s working within the confines of real-life events.
