Sania Saeed Has the Best Take on the Ertuğrul Debate

Her words are worth listening to.

Pakistani actress Sania Saeed is dealing her bets in the ‘to Ertuğrul or not to Ertuğrul’ debate. The actress stressed the need to ask more important questions from Pakistani content producers. She wants to know what’s their game plan after Ertugrul mania is over.

Rather than argue if Pakistan Television should serve as a platform for Turkish dramas or not, Sania Saeed wants us to ask how PTV is spending money on this.

She told Express Tribune that we should be obtaining and distributing foreign content based on a game plan, not on a whim.

“Was there a plan? Or does all this get done on whims such as, ‘Oh, the PM said ‘buy it, so buy it!’ What is the policy?”

The Aseerzadi actress stressed the need for a proper policy to import foreign dramas into the country, and to look ahead at its implications for PTV:

“There has to be a negotiation that is done continuously with the government to create a policy for your country. A while later after Ertuğrul finishes, everyone will forget all this and move on and this discrepancy will be buried. Who is negotiating with a clear-cut policy after or before that?”

With regards to the art aspect of Ertuğrul, Sania Saeed admires the storytelling like everyone else:

“I think Ertuğrul’s success is about the storytelling, the novelty of the story, and the fact that it comes from a different culture, … That’s why stories were told in the first place, right? People would travel from one place to another, telling stories about the places they’d come from,”

The Sang-e-Marmar actress explained that the popularity of the Turkish period drama is partially from the variety in content that it brings. The series allowed our audience to see different types of male and female characters, from warrior women to vulnerable men.

“These women are industrious, working women. They move freely in their tribes, lead them and run the economy, … It’s not only them being covered. They’re khanjar- (dagger) carrying, sword- swaying women. They are physically strong, which means their bodies weren’t limited and are free. They feel safe in their environment.”

It’s a safe bet that our audience is over stereotypical gender roles. Sania wants us to learn from foreign artwork like Diriliş: Ertuğrul.

“Their men are not only warriors, but they are also vulnerable, loving, compassionate, … They are not afraid to cry when their fathers, comrades, or soldiers die. They are not afraid to cry when they’re thinking of the woman they love or when their wife is in pain when their children are born,”

  1. Said saeed tum logon ke drama saas bahu bv ka aashiq in chakron se hi nh nklte

  3. Very sell said sania saeed.you are write….whoever os saying sania is wrong,it mrans they didn’t understand what she said.she loves Ertuğrul as se all do.she is just saying should have a policy.may be there would be some policy between 2 countries.i dont know about policy but we love #Ertuğrul and @enginaltan

  4. It’s very simple if we are producing dramas which attract audience like ertugul than no need to worry,
Actually since 2000 our drama industry hardly made a good drama rather than they produce Sas Baho and overdose it,
Good work always got attraction it’s not matter of borders ,
People’s how opposed Turkish dramas actually saving their face for bad work.

  5. People who are against this series should realize that everything is not meant for business. Though the series might b the biggest hit of the time.. BUT..
One should realize it is not a man made story. It is a islamic history which every muslim should be aware of…
However, about the Pakistani media industry.. there are plenty of islamic hereos and stories to be explored.. People who are against this should start working on other islamic stories..

  6. If a channel can air english movies whats wrong in airing turkish dramas? I dnt kno about now but since the begining of PTV its been airing english movies, dramas and cartoons. Nobody said why are they airing that then why has everyone suddenly hv problem with turkish drama?

  7. The ertugrul has successfully gain a competitive advantage over the local dramas, hence this moves from some local artists are indispensable and understandable. Speaking impartially most of our dramas are portraying a sour relation between mother and daughter in law.

  8. Sania Saeed, If you & your Industry make policy to make serials of this Standard; there is absolutely no need to afraid to anybody and no need of any other policy.

  9. Senator Faisal Javed said that the drama was a gift from Erdogan. So, I think PTV didn’t have to buy it.

  10. What about all Indian contents which was airing by our national TV channels and where are so called actresses who works in Indian movies. First of all you people have to have correct yourself and then talk about policies. It’s not to humiliate someone it’s my personal comments.

  11. Ms. Sania you are right. Showing Ertrugrul was a test case. You know that Mr Mahatir Erdogan and Khan agreed on creating a joint TV.
But much before that we have been discussing in our party (PTI) think tank…even b4 2018…that instead of Indian content we should be getting content from other Asian countries as well.
Ertrugrul started in 2014 and reached almost the whole world in 2019. And so the pressure on govt also increased. I have personally written to Fawad Ch (then info minister) for telecasting of Ertrugrul on PTV to get PTV viewership back and at the same time its business.
Recently I tweeted to PM khan reminding him the promise to telecast Ertrugrul on PTV.
Now IA the policy will b there on exchange of media. You are such an amazing artist you should also get your productions dubbed (like sang e mar mar) to be telecasted around the world. The small screen has grown much bigger in scope. Kindly request your producer friends to be proactive and ecplore the niche in the market.
    Regards.

  12. Pakistan television didn’t pay a penny for Ertugal Serial. It was gift from Turkey President to Pakistani Citizens. So, what’s problem of our some Artists like Reema and Yasir Hussain( who has actually nothing to do) , If our National Channel is airing? They all do works in private channels but now thay have problem with airing A foreigner Show on Ptv ?

  13. Salaamz,The erthugrul series has a lot to offer, it’s a combination of spy, drama, hypocrisy, romance, greed, mafia, decency, spirituality , leadership , followers , extremism, history realism, lessons n a whole lot more not forgetting top production, top actors top filming etc. This allows the movie industry to move to the next level n shows that the thrills of exaggerated hollywood movies just dont cut it! AK

  14. Admiring other culture is not a issue… it’s devaluing own culture. I ask you questions.
    1. Don’t we admire more those who speak better English rather than Urdu.
    2. Don’t we admire more those who wear hat than cap.
    3. Don’t we admire more who say wow than mashaAllah.
If yes.. it’s us to blame.. not ptv, not pm, not govt
We didn’t select someone like Abdul sattar edhi but always a westernized men. We value their tradition… we must accept and blame ourself.. BELIEVE ME ACCEPTANCE IS FIRST STAIR TOWARDS CORRECTION… Regards

  15. Very very bad experience to dubbing you people have to learn more practice so may you can but really we are disappointed ? from you are work.
If you can’t dubbing how you can make drama. Just waisting your time try to get other job your zero

  16. Ptv py pehly konsy dramy chal rahy thy…aik episode ko 10 bar repeat kr rahy thy…khuda bhala kry unka jinhu ny ertugrul ko onair kia aur PTV ko apna maqam dobara mila…

  17. The people who did the dubbing, they don’t seem to know their work properly, you can’t understand a single word. It is better to watch on Netflix. I am proud of our Muslim Heritage, it was Imran Khan’s smart move to show this drama in Pakistan. Our stars should have Confidence in themselves and stop complaining about Turkish drama. Few years ago there were lots of Turkish dramas were been shown but those were as stupid and revealing as Pakistani dramas, then, not a single person complained. The Pakistani stars are scared of this drama because they know to compete with it they have to learn Archery which is almost impossible for them. Sania Saeed is not against this drama. Good for her.

  18. Content you say, you don’t come out if the SaaS bahu saga.
Production cost cheap, same actors, no new faces, no academies institutions for developing new actors and not enough courage to spend hefty price and sorrow fully no business plan
Gone are the days when productions like Waris were dubbed and sold globally.
Investment should come from state policy departments.

  19. Ptv ko bhi Artugral ke standards ke drama serials banney chahiay, agar aif wolf night rider aor is tarah ke aor drama serials on air ho sakti han to yeh kion nahin .is ko surf entertainment ki hadd tak lena chahiay aor no doubt yeh ek bohat a chi drama serial thi jo family ke both ke deki ja sakti thi.
