Shahid Afridi Says He Respects His Daughters’ Independence

He even clarified his earlier remarks about not allowing them to play sports.

Cricket legend Shahid Afridi is one of the most popular national figures in Pakistan. Known for his swashbuckling style of cricket on field, he dominated the charts while playing for Pakistan. But off the field, ‘Lala’ is a bit of a conservative father who loves his daughters. Although, he has his reasons for not allowing his daughters to play sports.

Due to social and religious reasons, he doesn’t allow his daughters to play outdoor games. This stance of his has invited severe criticism from his detractors.

Recently he got a chance to clarify his earlier comments, and he took it.

In a recent live session with Sana Shahid, ‘Boom Boom’ Afridi talked about how he raised his daughters and clarified his stance on no sports for his daughters. He said,

“We have some people who get a little education and start speaking the western language, it is difficult to control them. First thing I never comment on anyone’s life. My daughters are getting an education and they have their own vision. My daughter Aqsa is the number one throw-ball player in her school. So we have to see a lot of things because we are Muslims and we have our Pathani culture. Our religion teaches us many things and we have to follow it but some people take it as negative. Honestly, I don’t care about people because my God is pleased with me.”

Afridi further added,

“I never stop my daughters from anything. My daughter Aqsa had a wish to join the army but I said to her that you are a little late, you can become a doctor. My daughter Ajwa wants to go to college for further education, my daughter Ansha wants to become a fashion designer and she wants to run my foundation with me. So I believe it’s my duty to tell them about wrong and right till a certain age and then they have their own life. I believe as a parent nobody can teach better than us.”

Going by his recent comments, it seems that he’s trying to figure out things as his daughters grow up. He does respect their need to be independent, and there are hints that he might soften his opposition to their goals if he believes they are making the right calls in life.
