Britain’s Prince Harry revealed in his upcoming memoir that his elder brother and heir to the throne, Prince William, assaulted him during a 2019 argument over his wife, the Duchess of Sussex, Meghan Markle.
A British publication obtained a copy of the highly-anticipated autobiography, Spare, which is due to publish on 10 January. The title of Prince Harry’s upcoming book Spare comes from an oft-cited quote in the British aristocratic circles about the need for an heir, and a spare.
In his upcoming autobiography, Prince Harry details several prominent events from his life, including a physical altercation with his brother William, the heir to throne and Prince of Wales.
Harry wrote,
He[Prince William] set down the water, called me another name, then came at me. It all happened so fast. So very fast. He grabbed me by the collar, ripping my necklace, and he knocked me to the floor. I landed on the dog’s bowl, which cracked under my back, the pieces cutting into me. I lay there for a moment, dazed, then got to my feet and told him to get out.
Prince Harry further explained that William challenged him to hit back but he refused. The Prince of Wales later returned to the scene, “looking regretful, and apologized,” asking Harry not to discuss this with his wife Meghan.
The spokespeople for King Charles and Prince William have declined to comment on the incident written in the upcoming memoir.
Both Prince Harry and Williams are the children of the late Princess Diana. The two were always close since their mother’s death, however, they have fallen out in recent years. According to sources, the dispute between Harry and Williams arose over the Royal family’s disapproval of Meghan Markle.
Harry wrote in his upcoming book that William called Meghan “difficult”, “rude”, and “abrasive”, which he said sounded like “the press narrative” about his wife.
Prince Harry and Hollywood actress Meghan Markle got married in 2018. The couple grew distant from the Royal family, announcing their decision to “step back” from royal duties in 2020 after several public statements of mistreatment by Harry’s family, accusing Buckingham Palace of planting negative stories in the press.
