Steven Spielberg Regrets Causing Reduced Shark Populations with ‘Jaws’

RIP sharks.

The Steven Spielberg-directed suspense thriller, Jaws, broke all box office records six months after its release in 1975 and is still regarded by critics as one of the most influential movies in cinematic history today. However, he revealed in an interview with BBC Radio on Sunday that he feels accountable for the annihilation of shark populations in the decades after the film’s premiere

He said,

I still fear … that sharks are somehow mad at me for the feeding frenzy of crazy sword fishermen that happened after 1975. I really, truly regret that.

About Jaws

The store takes place in the imaginary town of Amity Island which is terrorized by a man-eating great white shark. Incidentally, what many people do not know is that the movie was based on Peter Benchley’s book of the same name.

The movie has a four-part franchise as well: Jaws (1975), Jaws 2 (1978), Jaws 3D (1983), and Jaws: The Revenge (1987).

Jaws won several significant honors, including three Oscars, a Golden Globe, and a BAFTA. Nevertheless, Steven Spielberg regrets that it is believed to have had a significant negative impact on the general understanding about sharks.

According to research released last year by the British weekly scientific journal, Nature, overfishing has caused a 71 percent decline in marine shark populations worldwide since the 1970s. As much as people love Jaws, some of them blame Steven Spielberg for playing a role in the public’s perception of sharks and driving support for killing them.

The popularity of the movie skyrocketed when a 2006 action-adventure video game called Jaws Unleashed was released, inspired by the 1975 movie, Jaws. It was created by Appaloosa Interactive and distributed by Majesco Entertainment.

The game featured open-world gameplay, with the player controlling a gigantic great white shark that could freely cruise the sea, feeding on other animals and humans while destroying everything in its path and was released for Microsoft Windows, Xbox, and PlayStation 2.
