While Pakistan is pretty over the Panama Leaks, Netflix, on the other hand, is taking us on a jog down memory lane with ‘The Laundromat‘.

If you ever wanted to know how some of the world’s richest men and women (including a certain political family in Pakistan) hid their money, well this is it:

The movie is supposed to be a fictional story of how America dealt with the Panama Leaks. In reality, it was a German journalist that exposed a Panama based law firm Mossack Fonseca for helping its clients in money laundering.

Just like the rest of the world, Panama Leaks exposed thousand of money launderers in the United States. This including everyone from business people to politicians. The inside source that leaked the information from the firm cited his reasons as:

“Simply because I understood enough about their contents to realize the scale of the injustices they described”

Plot

Laundromat narrates the tale of a widow (Meryl Streep) who is cheated out of money by the Panama-based law firm Mossack Fonseca.

This widow decides to investigate what led to her insurance fraud. We then get a look at how the Panama Papers or Panama Leaks exposed Mossack Fonseca’s 11.5 million encrypted confidential documents that proved how they helped millionaires launder money.

The actual Panama Papers documents were released on April 3, 2016, by the German newspaper Süddeutsche Zeitung (SZ).

Based on the trailer, this widow follows leads to a pair of Panama City law partners who are exploiting the world’s financial system. Laundromat cast Oscar-winner Gary Oldman and Antonio Banderas as these scheming lawyers.

The Informant! director Steven Soderbergh is also directing this tale of real crimes. While Scott Z. Burns penned the screenplay.
