When you think of pizza, what comes to your mind? Cheese? Crust? Heavenly sauce or pepperoni? When you put these four together in the correct order, a traditional pizza is made. But what if there is a pizza which doesn’t have any of these four elements?

You’ve heard that right. There is a pizza which is not exactly a pizza. In fact, it is a fusion food which is inspired by the famous Japanese dish sushi.

This unique take on pizza originated in Nami Japanese Restaurant, Toronto and has been adopted by other Japanese restaurants across Canada and USA.

This reminds us of pizza jelly, one of the best snacks in Pakistan.

The crust of the pizza has been replaced by deep-fried sushi rice. The crispy on the outside, chewy on the inside rice is topped with sushi-grade fish in umami sauce, which is made of wasabi and soy, and then garnished with chopped onions and tobiko (fish roe).

The Birth of Sushi Pizza

It all began when chef, Kaoru Ohsada moved to Canada in the 1980s and began working at Japanese restaurants. Ohsada was trained in French cuisine and while working at Nami in the 1990s, he experimented with cooking techniques as he shared none of the deference of traditionalists to sushi.

A restaurant meal of smoked salmon on a hash brown, gave him the idea to do something similar to sushi as well. Ohsada fried some sushi rice, topped it with salmon and presented it with chopped onions and flying fish roe. Customers loved it, and his bosses were pleased to have some use for leftover rice.

Ohsada later improved his original creation by adding a drizzle of spicy mayonnaise and a soy-wasabi sauce to the garnish. And this is how these mini sushi pizzas came into being.

A Treat For Seafood Lovers

Today, this sushi pizza comes with various toppings of crispy fried onions, pickled ginger, nori (seaweed), and even sometimes avocados.

The Toronto trend became even more crazy in United States, where some restaurants make sushi pizzas that truly resemble the traditional pie. Chefs stack sushi rice on a triangular wedge of nori, top it off with fresh fish, sauces and vegetables and roll the wide end of the nori to resemble the crusty edge of a pizza slice.

This is a unique way to enjoy sea food and sushi beginners can truly delve into the layers of textures and taste. The sushi pizza is a winner and this trend should also enter Pakistani food market.

There are tons of sushi lovers here and they would be excited to try something out of the ordinary for the love of food.
