Tragedy Strikes: Umar Sharif’s Daughter Passes Away Due to ‘Illegal’ Organ Transplant

Are the authorities listening?

Umar Sharif

Pakistani comedian Umar Sharif’s daughter passed away in Lahore on Tuesday, February 18. Hira Umar, aged 34, fell victim to an illegal organ transplant surgery at an undisclosed location in Azad Kashmir.

According to reports, Hira had a kidney infection, due to which she underwent a kidney transplant a week ago. Her brother, Jawad Umar, alleged that the surgery was unsuccessful and that it was supposed to be conducted at Lahore.

However, the surgeon, Dr. Fawad Mumtaz “fraudulently” took her to Azad Kashmir. Jawad also stated that the surgeon charged Rs 3.4 million for the organ transplant.

After two days, Hira’s condition worsened and she was then admitted to a private hospital in Lahore, according to the Punjab Human Organ Transplant Authority.

Investigation launched

A joint team of the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) and the Human Organ Transplant Authority (HOTA) has been constituted to investigate the case.

The team acted upon the written complaint of Jawad and raided the house of transplant surgeon Dr Fawad Mumtaz in Bahria Town, Lahore.

Jawad reported that his sister Hira, developed serious complications a week after the surgery. He also alleged that Hira was brought to them in a life threatening condition.

He, however, feigned ignorance about the exact location, building or road where the surgery was performed.

According to the Law

Under the law, the kidney transplant surgery is considered illegal if the donor is unrelated. The law only allows cadaveric or blood-related donation of organs.

According to reports, Umar Sharif’s family had approached Dr. Fawad Mumtaz through an agent. Hira then remained under treatment for three weeks at a private hospital in Azad Kashmir for the kidney transplantation.

As stated by her brother, the doctor charged a hefty sum of money for the surgery, therefore it is being investigated whether the cost also included kidney donation. If so, the transplantation will be declared as illegal.

Umar Sharif is currently in Houston, USA to attend an event. He has canceled all his commitments now and is returning to Pakistan at the earliest. Hira Umar is likely to be laid to rest today, February 19.
