In a remarkable act of philanthropy, Chaudhary Muhammad Aslam, a British-Pakistani originally from Mirpur, has dedicated his entire life savings to transform the educational landscape of earthquake-ravaged Azad Kashmir.
After nearly five decades of hard work in the United Kingdom, Aslam returned to his homeland in 2023, only to find that the scars of the devastating 2005 earthquake still lingered—especially in the form of destroyed schools and neglected children’s education.
Moved by the dire conditions, where children in remote areas continued to study outdoors on bare ground, Aslam made a life-altering decision. Upon returning to the UK, he sold all five of his properties—assets accumulated over a lifetime—and donated the entire sum, amounting to crores of rupees, to rebuild the region’s educational infrastructure.
Partnering with the UK-based humanitarian organization Muslim Charity, Aslam personally funded and supervised the construction of 35 modern schools across the most affected districts: Bagh, Haveli, Pallandri, Rawalakot, and Muzaffarabad. These new schools are equipped with proper classrooms, furniture, and facilities, providing thousands of children with a safe and dignified environment to learn and grow.
Aslam’s initiative addresses a long-standing gap left by state neglect, more than 15 years after the 2005 earthquake destroyed over 2,400 schools in Azad Kashmir. His selfless contribution has not only restored hope for countless families but has also set a powerful example of humanitarian service, showing how individual action can bring about lasting change.
Today, thanks to Chaudhary Aslam’s sacrifice, a new generation of students in Azad Kashmir is receiving the education they deserve, sheltered from the elements and empowered to dream of a brighter future.
