Wrong Number: This Pakistani Man Remained Undetected for Years as a Resident of India

This seems straight out of Bollywood.

Sometimes, one wrong phone call is all it takes for a love story to blossom. Such is the case of Dowlatha Bee, a widow with a son who hails from the remote village of Gadivumela, Kurnool district in India

Her destiny changed, when one fated day she made a phone call which turned out to be a wrong number. She connected with a man named Gulzar Khan, originally from Pakistan but was residing in Mumbai illegally at the time.

As the two got to know each other, love eventually blossomed and that led to them being happily married.

Trouble started soon enough, when Gulzar Khan made a slew of calls to his Pakistani family back home, which alerted the intelligence agencies. This led to his arrest by the Hyderabadi police and him being imprisoned.

About Gulzar

According to the information given by the family members and local police. Gulzar is from Pakistan. He went to Saudi Arabia in 2009, in search for a job. However, he was arrested by the Saudi police as he failed to produce documents.

Gulzar Khan then made false claims about his origins.by proclaiming he was from Haridwar, India. Miraculously, he produced fake documents to prove this claim. As per his family members, he arrived in Mumbai in 2009, after being deported by the Saudi authorities.

Wrong number

Gulzar ended up working as a painter in Mumbai. Indian citizen Dowlatha Bee’s call, which was meant for someone else, reached Gulzar Khan instead. Both of them, however, kept in touch and their hearts swelled in love for each other.

Later on, when Gulzar told Dowlatha that he hailed from Punjab, a misconception arose, which led to Dowlatha believing that he was from the Indian side of Punjab.

Gulzar visited Dowlatha in Kurnool in 2011, who is currently 51 and proposed to her. Her family members agreed to the proposal in good spirits and for verification purposes even approached the local police to verify the authenticity of Gulzar as he was from a far away place. After receiving the ‘trustworthy’ opinion of the police, they went ahead with the marriage.

The pair have 4 children amongst them and Dowlatha Bee’s first born child from her previous marriage is also living with them. Both of them were involved in earning, with Gulzar continuing to work as a painter and daily wager and Dowlatha Bee as an “Ayah” in the village’s private school.

An Indian Resident

On the basis of his Gadivemula residency, Gulzar managed to obtain an Adhaar card and various other documents, including a passport on November 29, 2019.

Despite living a content and smooth life. Gulzar came into frequent contact with his Pakistani family members. He convinced them of his return to his native village in Punjab.

On December 3, Gulzar Khan and his family left for Hyderabad to complete some formalities, concerning their upcoming journey to Pakistan. It was only then that they were taken into custody by the authorities on December 4, after being alerted by the Intelligence agency regarding the frequent number of calls, which Gulzar made to his family in Pakistan.

“It was only after police took him into custody that we came to know about the actual identity of Gulzar Khan,’’ stated Dowlatha Be. She pleaded that her husband had no ill will or bad intentions and he would take care of them, even if he took them back home to Pakistan.

She demands he should be freed and as he has not committed any crimes. Police sources verified that Gulzar had zero criminal cases under his record, nor was he involved in any suspicious activities, though he did not have valid documents to reside in the country.

Local villages stated that Gulzar recently bought an Android phone and with the help of the locals, even installed WhatsApp and other social apps, through which he made phone calls to his family and even introduced Dowlatha Bee to them

DSP Nandyal Chidananda Reddy admitted that they were not aware of the incident till they were alerted by the Hyderabadi police. He stated:

“We are investigating how he managed to stay in Kurnool for such a long time. We will also find out how he managed to obtain a passport.’’
