Tecno Spark 4; the entry-level choice?

The Good
  • Affordable
  • Big Screen
  • Good Battery Life
The Bad
  • Low PPI density
  • Bad RAM management
  • Very low-end cameras

Tecno Spark 4 is an entry-level device that got a lot of attention. The smartphone was released at a very competitive price and respectable entry-level specs. Let’s see if the phone lives up to its claims.

Design and Display

Tecno Spark 4 has a plastic body that feels somewhat cheap in the hand. There is no oleophobic coating at the back so the phone attracts a lot of fingerprints. There is a fingerprint scanner at the back of the phone and the display has a tear-drop notch that we have been seeing in almost every entry-level to a mid-range device for years. Overall, the generic design is slightly disappointing The display panel is a 720p 6.52″ IPS LCD with a pixel density of 258 PPI. Streaming YouTube videos or binge-watching Netflix shows will not look like anything special. The blacks feel a little bit dull and the color saturation is mediocre.

Cameras

There is a triple camera setup on the back of the device. The setup includes a 13MP camera with Dual flash and a 2MP depth sensor with QVGA for portrait shots. Cameras do a fair job for a phone at this price point. The portraits do blow out some of the details of the object in focus. Bright colors in the photos get mixed up, and the cameras perform poorly in low lighting conditions. There is an 8MP camera on the front that also misses out basic details.

RAM, Processor and Storage

Tecno Spark 4 has a Helio A22 chipset. The budget chipset has its fair share of drawbacks with only a single plus point, its price. Unsurprisingly, the Spark 4 is a slow phone, anything that exceeds basic daily tasks like texting or making phone calls will make the phone chug. The 3GB RAM is managed poorly and apps frequently get closed in the background. The 32 GB eMMC storage is slow and the apps might test your patience while they load up.

Battery

The battery is one of the few merits of this device. It has a low resolution LCD Panel, an efficient chipset but a 4000 mAh battery. There is no fast charging here and it still charges via the old MicroUSB port.

Verdict

Tecno Spark 4 is a solid device when you consider it’s price. Other than that, there is not much to talk about. Still, if all you are considering is price when making your purchase, this smartphone is not a bad option.
