Following are the details of launch event and the Press Release

Telenor Pakistan and Tameer Microfinance Bank together have announced the launch of easypaisa, a uniquely convenient and safe way for everyone to carry out financial transactions. easypaisa users will have the freedom to make bill payments and send and receive money at thousands of outlets and in addition manage their bank accounts over their mobile phones. easypaisa combines the best from the financial and mobile sectors, offering the first branchless banking solution of its kind in Pakistan and neighboring countries.

Presiding over the easypaisa launch event, Governor State Bank of Pakistan, Syed Salim Raza in his address emphasized government’s focus on promoting financial access in the country. He said, “Helping people to get access to financial services is central to improving their livelihood. Branchless banking has been used internationally as a successful tool to reach customers who cannot be served by conventional branch-based financial services. That is why State Bank has been very supportive of innovative synergies in this field, a prime example of which is easypaisa by Tameer Bank and Telenor Pakistan.”

Director Telecom, Ministry of Information Technology & Telecommunications, Mudassar Hussain highlighted the critical role mobile industry has to play in providing financial access to the un-banked. He said, “The total life of mobile industry in Pakistan is less than 20 years while formal banking channels have been around for some 60 years. However, interestingly, in comparison to more than 90 million mobile subscriptions, the number of bank accounts is less than 30 million. The Ministry is of the view that this presents an immense opportunity for the mobile industry to add value to the financial sector and serve the un-banked. We have been actively supporting the consultation process and hope that easypaisa becomes a resounding success story for the industry and country.”

Chief Executive Officer, Telenor Pakistan, Jon Eddy Abdullah called easypaisa a revolutionary solution. He said, “easypaisa will allow users across the board to access convenient and secure financial services. In an environment where only 12% of adult population is formally served with financial services, easypaisa will promise tremendous financial empowerment. It will provide opportunity for everyone to utilize well-priced, secure, and efficient financial services at the corner store without opening a bank account, or through ones own handset with a Tameer Bank account depending on the transaction type. The inclusion into the general economy will create opportunities to save, pay for services more efficiently without the loss of productivity, and to utilize more advanced financial instruments in the future.

  • I think this is another way of making money and striping users. Telenor as well as everyone else in market is charging extra money for bill payment, I dont want to pay extra – govt of pakistan is already ripping me off with bills.

I use UBL online payment – free of cost! anytime! anywhere and no hassle of going anywhere!

(and no i dont work for UBL)

  • Well any utility bill(PTCL, KESC etc) contains bank charges…if we are not going to bank why we pay bank charges…it should be removed from bills and when ever u go to bank, bank will charge you other wise we will pay our mobile operator for this service…!!!
    what do you think…???

    • bhai tm log kbi khush nae rah sakte ho hmesha na shukri he krna , bank ma ja kr ganto line ma lagay rahna pasand hai tm logo ko par 25 rupes k liye mar rahe ho , ye nae ke shukar hai ke ye ezy paisa k service agai hai 25 uper dyne parh rahe hain to kiya howa

  • Awesome yar.
Acha hay iss tarha ki facilities honi chahiyee.
Yar kabhi khushi ka izhar bhi kar lia kero har waqt kisi cheez mei nukas he nikaltay rehtay ho be positive.
Aur iss service ka jo yeh extra charge kar rahay hien woh bilkul minimum hay.
Agar koi 4000 ya 5000 ka bill jama kara sakta hay tu kia 25 rupay extra nai dey sakta?
Extra charges asani kay he samaj lo warna bank ki line mei lagay raho 2 hrs aur bacha lo phir 25 rupay.
    Always be positive.

    • khair minimum charges to nahi hain :-) Zong or NADRA walay same service free of cost provide ker rahay hain :-)

  • Simply we are entering new era may God help us to improve country situation
    Good Telenor and mobilink

  • Telenor’s EP is a good product as far as convenience is concerned. But this is not Mobile commerce. Even non-mobile customers can pay their bills.

About service charges, Telenor is charging Rs.10/15/25 for this service, but most of the consumers don’t know that there is already a charge of Rs.8 in every utility bill as service charges for the collecting party. Where will those Rs.8 go? Also, this facility is not available 24/7…. you cannot pay your bill at 2:00am in the morning when there isnt any shop open…specially in Islamabad.

In my opinion, true M-commerce products currently existing in Pakistan are Mobilink Genie and Mobilink Mobile Money Order. In Mobilink Genie, you can connect your bank account to your mobilink number and pay utility bills through your mobile phone anytime, anywhere. In Mobile Money Order (MMO), you can open an account in Post Office and deposit money into that. To transfer money to any Mobilink subscriber, you don’t have to go to post office. You can do that by just sending an SMS. You can also send money to any Mobilink subscriber even if he/she is not registered for MMO. The receiver can then go to Post Office to receive money. you can also use MMO account as bank account and hold money into that as long as you want.

I have used all these services including Telenor’s EasyPaisa, but i found Genie and MMO more convenient and I think this is true Mobile Commerce.

By the way, I am not a Mobilink employee :)

  • I Think NADRA e-sahulat billing payment service is far better and customer oriented from telenor’s and mobilink bill payment system. because customer have not to pay any additional amount, not to pay any tax etc. E-sahulat by NADRA is considered as ‘The Future’

  • i second Usman here… such a big campaign for such a fail! i was really looking forward to this service but man has it disappointed me… i have a mobilink connection and my bank account tied to my Mobilink Genie. why would i visit a small retailer (who cannot even credit my airtime properly), pay him extra service fee and get the same “stamp on my bill” when i can pay it through my mobile with just a few clicks?

    • Mr. Zinc

I would like to indicate that
      1. You are also paying the extra charges for bill payment, its not a free service (its limited to Citi/Atlas Bank Account holders)
      2. How many people like Mr. Zinc are using Smart Phones and GPRS to use service like Mobilink Gennie, in comparison EasyPaisa can be used by any one regardless of what connection I am using, I am having Nokia 3310 or smart phone, I am using GPRS or not, my phone supports Java application or not, or I have bank account/Credit card in Citi/Atlas?

So you need to think about a service from mass perspective not your own perspective :)

      • Buddy,

I agree that Telenor have’nt lauched all the services on full throttle but there strategy is way too good. They are focusing on the unBanked sector and really kicking ass. Telenor started with the Bill Payments (network independent). They are pretty much focused on making easy paisa a renowned brand in Pakistan for Payments. There next step would be P2P and P2M payments. On the other hand Mobilink just launched the service for Mobilink Subscribers who have bank accounts in either Atlas or Kasab. Innov8 (Genie) is a local company and on shoe string, probably they won’t be able to add value to Mobilink’s current mBanking services.

In a nutshell, we all are eagerly waiting for Mobilink to play its cards now.

  • Dear Atta,
Kindly tell the readers of Propakistani about the rumers of Tax on MIS Call & Call Receiving in next few days.Urgent Reply….
    WE ALL WERE WAITING…..

  • Those who are saying that mobilink genie is better let me ask them, can a person without GPRS still can use mobilink genie answer is no, can a non mobilink use mobilink genie answer is no, can a person who doesnot have a bank account in mobilink panel banks can still use mobilink genie the answer is no. thats the difference which we can see in easypaisa, which is for everyone irrespective even if he is mobile user or not.

Ok now the extra charges, guyz there is no such thing like a free lunch, you alwaya have to pay extra for the convenience, you have to see the oppurtunity cost. I fyou think that a paying Rs.10 is better than staying in a que or running after time to get bill paid in office hours than go for it yar easypaisa kisi ko galay sey pakar kay thori kehta hai kay meri service use karo.

I think we should appreciate what easypaisa is doing, atleast we are moving ahead as Pakistani’s and please stop thinking about urself only think of those who are not GPRS users, dont have bank accounts in those banks that mobilink have, think of everyone easypaisa is the service for everyone.

about Zong , well their service is only in Zong customer centers not every where ZOng only have 22 outlets (CS centers) for this service.

Guyz its always better to do research before giving you own statements thanks
