Mobilink 3G Setup is on the Roll

Mobilink is going ahead with 3G Swap in Pakistan these days. Currently its in Punjab Region. We have earlier disclosed this news to our readers regarding Telenor’s 3G Swap too.

Mobilink used to be the target of the critics regarding up-gradation of the network and 3G approval. But Mobilink is giving them a blow with this roll out. And yes vendor is once again Huawei.

Fly has disclosed to us that Mobilink is now having more 3G Setups than Telenor apparently. Lahore region is the currently under focus.

It may be recalled, that Cellular Companies will offer 3G services only after they get 3G license from PTA. Current network Swap is only getting ready for the gears.

  • Hi All!

The stories about Mobilink and Telenor having a 3G setup are not true.

Telenor has done a 3G Trial with both Huawei & NSN and after that thay awarded a contract to NSN for 3G. This was a nation-wide contract for major cities only. But still this equipment has not been installed yet anwhere in Pakistan.

Mobilink has not done 3G trials with any vendor so far. The stories one keeps hearing about SWAPs is the 2G SWAP which is continuing in Central Punjab in which they are swapping out Motorola with Huawei 2G.

None of the operators in Pakistan are ready for 3G at the moment in terms of Radio Network. But if the licences are awarded then they can launch 3G services pretty quickly ~1-2 months’ time.

  • About seeing 3G singals when you don’t have 2G signals.

It is normal cell phone behaviour. Whenever, there is no 2G coverage then the cell phone changes its mode to 3G (Dual Mode Cell Phone only). That does not mean that 3G is working since you are still getting zero signals. So the 3G sign simply indicates that your phone is now in 3G mode.

  • Haroon is right. Both WorldCall and PTCL have already deployed 3G in the form of CDMA EV-DO Rev. A.

Just to expand up on it though, both CDMA and WCDMA/UMTS/HSPA (amongst others) are categorized as 3G technologies.

The GSM operators upgrade path uses WCDMA/UMTS.

The only hiccup in Pakistan for 3G is the “spectrum auction” at 2.1 GHz, otherwise the current licenses are all technology neutral and any operator can deploy 3G technology in its allocated spectrum.

Does anyone know which spectrum is Mobilink using for its 3G deployments? (Their current spectrum in which they have 2G deployments is in 900 and 1800 MHz).

  • i tell u what , Mobilink hasn’t purchased any thing related to 3G :D

i am well linked with the procurement team :P

    so its a rumor.
