TIP Pressed to Resolve its Miseries at Earliest

Senate’s Standing Committee on Information Technology and Telecommunication expressed its annoyance over the affairs of Telephone Industries of Pakistan (TIP) and directed the management to resolve its outstanding financial and land/properties issues with management of PTCL and NRTC on urgent basis.

Standing Committee made the observations during its official visit to TIP headquarters in Haripur. The visit was aimed at reviewing performance of different organizations of TIP including TIP school, hospital and colony.

During its visit, Standing Committee decided to call all the stakeholders to determine outstanding issues and to formulate a plan for fixing them.

On the other hand, Ms. Anusha Rehman, Minister for State for IT and Telecom, today pressed TIP management for earliest resolution of its outstanding financial and managerial issues as well.

Minister was chairing TIP’s Board of Directors meeting today. Meeting was also attended by Federal Secretary IT Azmat Ali Ranjha, MD TIP Zia ul Haq, Member Legal Ameena Sohail, Member HR Tahir Mushtaq and other Board Members.

It was categorically stated that the Board would not tolerate any kind of malpractices in TIP and TIP resources should only be used for its mandated purposes.

Earlier Mr. Zia ul Haq, MD TIP, had informed the Standing Committee that the institute was not upgraded according to the modern technology requirements for the last 20 years and it is going in losses.

Committee was further informed that TIP has 2,415 kanals of land but only 432 kanals is in its possession while 611 kanals are currently with NRTC and remaining land is controlled by PTCL.

Government is ideally aiming to revive TIP and then lend it to any mobile phone maker for local manufacturing of mobile phones. Given the current situation of TIP, plan looks far fetched idea but not completely impossible.
