FBR Imposes Another 5% Tax on Weddings & Other Gathering Events

If you thought there was nothing left to be taxed, get ready to be surprised. The Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) has imposed a 5 percent Advance Tax on weddings and gatherings today. The Advance Tax has been imposed under Section 236D of the Income Tax Ordinance 2001.

According to the FBR notification, “Every prescribed person shall collect advance tax at the rate of five percent on the total amount of the bill”. The tax will be applicable on bills for holding any functions at the following places:

  • Club
  • Commercial lawn
  • Hotel
  • Restaurant
  • Any community place
  • Marquee
  • Marriage hall
  • Any other place used for the purpose of holding any events.

The list of events that will be taxed are:

  • Concert
  • Exhibition
  • Party
  • Seminar
  • Wedding
  • Workshop
  • Any other gathering at any of the above mentioned places.

To further clarify the application of the new tax, the notification states that any place where food is served, any similar service or facility is provided by a person or commercial entity, the service provider will collect a 5 percent advance tax on the total payment of such food, service or facility from the person conducting or organising the event/function.

The point to be noted is that the government already charges a sales tax at all restaurants and similar service providers. By implementing this additional tax, the public will be even more burdened. Ever since the budget announcement earlier this year, we have been constantly getting mini budgets with more and more tax implementations on daily activities.

  • What do you expect. Ya to Hajj se be kamai kerty hain. Hajjion ko be loot’tay hain. This is pakistan.

  • They’re making difficult for people to get married. I’m afraid this will increase Zina. Even without this tax wedding has been difficult for common man, with so many ceremonies we adopted from hindu system.

    • Indeed you’re right.
The best way for marriage is the Islamic way as simple as possible with minimum economic burden on both sides!

    • What “Hindu” system, and what simple Islamic way? Marriages can be done in both simple or lavish irrespective of their religions. If Islamic marriages are simple, and promotes that then explain the “custodians” of Islam Saudi’s wedding, or any Gulf wedding. Anything wrong with society is because of individual men, not any religion. The reason why Pakistan is this way. Anything wrong in Pakistan, is because of Hindus, Jews, Americans, Shias but definitely not us. They will tax you for gathering in a mosque, don’t point your fingers on any other religion then.

  • aam logon ke bachay parh likh kar behtreen Engineer ban sakte hain Judge ban sakte hain Beaurocrat ban sakte hain Scientist ban sakte hain Journalist ban sakte hain lekin kabi National Assembly me nahi ja sakte ghareeb ki tarjumani ameer karay ga to aisa hi hoga ghareeb ki tarjumani jab ghareeb karay ga tab wo ghareeb ke haq me sahi faisla karay ga keun ke wo faisla us ke apne haq me ho ga – Hassan Nisar

    • bhai mere humare yahan National Assembly tak pohanchne ke liye croron ruppes lagte hain woh kaun dega, balke ab tu baat shayad croron se bhi aage chali gayi ho…

  • Foreign direct investments down, exports are down even Zardari’s govt managed more exports than Mian Sab’s and now remittances also decreased this month, with humongous amounts of debt to be repaid in the next few years I fear situation could be really bad for us common people.

  • Is this supposed to be a technology website or am I reading English version of urdupoint?

  • Well, we should have a “Fart Tax” as well!!!! wow brilliant idea Ishq Dollar man!!! ye reh geya hai baki ab, for filers and non-filers.

  • The tax should depend on the size of the event. 10 people gathering at a cheap seminar should not have the same tax rate as 600 people at an extravagant wedding.

    • Insidious Tax is one thing…. but this tax money squandered away by corrupt politicians and nearly all govt departments!
Zakat deducation is one ,where billions is embezzled by all yet no one to question it!

  • This a good step by government to tax these ceremonies, people in our society are spending lavishly in wedding and the food wasted there really highlights the difference of rich and poor.

    • You are a Grade A First Class Idiot.

This hurts the poor people more than the rich. Don’t poor people need a place for weddings? Don’t poor people have less budget to spend on events? This adds 5% to their cost, making it harder for the poor.

You hate the rich? Fine. But don’t RUIN THE LIVES OF THE POOR in the process.

    • a perfect response from an idiot. Your logic doesnt make any kind of sense! what does rich and poor got to do with weddings? how does a poor feel when he’s pushed away like dirt to make way for rich ones to pass by along with their security vehicles? Wedding is overrated anyway, just get yourself A Nikkah in a masjid and party at private residence like its 1969.

  • thid is not a new tax, they imposed 10% two years back and in 2015 June they reduced it to 5%

  • for common people wedding will be done at home or any open plot instead of going to hall. for rich people they will use parliament house pm house president house for wedding ad they are not taxed.
