First Case of Chikungunya Confirmed in Islamabad

Amidst the Chikungunya chaos in Karachi where several thousand people were affected by the disease, there were legitimate fears that the disease could not remain confined to the metropolis for long.

We are now hearing reports that the Chikungunya virus has now surfaced in Islamabad, after making headlines in Karachi in the last week. National Institute of Health (NIH) has verified the presence of the virus in Islamabad. A lady who traveled to Islamabad from Karachi has also been identified related to the case.

Case Details

According to news reports, Surriya, the affected patient, reached Islamabad 3 days ago and was a resident of the Saudabad area of Karachi, located near Malir where the outbreak was reported initially.

She went to a doctor, complaining about fever and severe pain. Blood samples were sent to NIH for identification of the disease (if present). Once the results came back positive, a health team of doctors and paramedical staff were sent to the lady’s residence at Sohan.

The team fumigated her house as well as 25 nearby houses as well as a precautionary and preventative measure.

Initial Outbreak

This all started a few weeks ago when a mysterious outbreak in Karachi claimed 30,000 victims according to various conflicting reports. WHO and Ministry of Health initially denied any Chikungunya (rumored to be the mysterious disease) cases in the country.

The virus’s presence was later confirmed and reported to the WHO by the Ministry of National Health Services, Regulation and Coordination.

About The Disease

The disease belongs to same family of viruses as Dengue and Zika. It is a non-lethal form of the Dengue virus and causes immense joint pain and fever. In rare but extreme cases it can also cause your joints to be paralyzed completely.

Prevention is always better than the cure. You can follow theses prevention techniques used for staying safe from dengue as the Chikungunya virus is transmitted by same type of mosquitoes as well.
