Game of Thrones Is The Most Pirated TV Show in the World

The HBO TV series, Game of Thrones, once again maintains its crown for the most pirated TV show of the year. The piracy collecting firm MUSO, revealed that the seventh season of Game of Thrones was pirated more than a billion times.

The TV show was hacked and leaked in flabbergasting numbers

While the TV show gained record breaking ratings, it also faced piracy, hacking attempts and leaks in astounding numbers.

Episode 6 of the series, which was leaked several days before the official release, was pirated more than the season finale itself.

“It’s no secret that HBO has been plagued by security breaches throughout the latest season, which has seen some episodes leak before broadcast and added to unlicensed activity,” said Andy Chatterley, MUSO’s CEO and Co-Founder.

Viwership Breakdown

Season 7 of the TV series that brought both tears and joy to its viewers, gained most of its viewership through unauthorized streaming services.

Torrent and direct downloads contributed to only a small amount of this viewership.

The pirate viewership can be broken down into the following categories:

  • Streaming services: 85%
  • Torrents: (9%)
  • Direct downloads: (6%).
  • Private torrent trackers: less than 1%.

According to statistics, an episode was pirated 140 million times on average while it had only 32 million views through legal channels.

The data signifies the dire need for rights-holders to shift their focus from controlling torrent traffic to unauthorized streaming.

Unauthorised Sites And Torrent, But There’s More!

While the data collected by MUSO covers thousands of popular websites to control traffic, it does not cover them all. There is no question regarding MUSO’s claim that the season had more than a billion downloads, however, the company has not covered the entire pirate landscape.

The Chinese traffic, which is very active in piracy, has not been taken into account by the company in its calculated statistics.

Similarly, pirate sources such as fully-loaded Kodi boxes, are not included either.
