Careem captains have turned up in huge numbers in the federal capital to record their protest against the ride-hailing service.
This is due to the fact that Careem is facing a severe backlash from its drivers against the new ‘guaranteed bonus’ policy introduced by the company.
The captains say that the new policy is completely intolerable and inhuman, mentioning that it will make earning bonus almost impossible.
The protest started at 10 am today in Islamabad.
Protest and Demands
Drivers from both Careem-operated cars and bikes are on the road to show their dissatisfaction against the company’s bonus policy change.
As per new policy, bike captains will have to complete 14 rides with minimum 80% acceptance rate and should be available for over 8 hours.
Policy for earning guaranteed was also changed for Careem Go, Go+ and Business category and no driver seemed satisfied with it.
The new policy was implemented on 25th December’ 2017.

The captains have issued a list of demands that they want fulfilled before they can resume their work with Careem. They said that:
- the updated bonus guarantee is not acceptable in any way.
- the previous policy of Rs 200 bonus on 8 rides should be restored since the temperature in the city isn’t feasible for such long work hours.
- The current policy of Rs 1600 bonus after 14 rides is impossible to get. Captains can’t find 14 rides on bikes and neither can’t they be found.
- Careem should change the bonus guarantee as soon as possible and restore the previous policy.
- Remaining payments and IDs of captains that have been blocked must be restored.
Helmet Policy Also Comes Under Fire
Another reason why bike captains are on protest is because Careem has made buying extra helmets mandatory for them.
This is because the Traffic police has implemented a new law according to which both driver and passenger have to wear helmets while riding bikes.
It is a good initiative however Careem is making bike captains buy helmets from select companies for extra money. According to captains, these helmets are available for Rs 500 in the market however Careem is charging over Rs 1000 for them.
Drivers also say that Careem has been blocking captains’ IDs, justifying it on the pretext of them producing unsatisfactory results. Captains say that more protests will follow countrywide if Careem doesn’t change its policy soon.
On Behalf of Captains/Vendor in Rawalpindi /Islamabad, Here we are sharing some very serious and genuine issues which have been ignored by your so called helpline, captain support centers (Blue area, Rahman Abad, Bahria and G-12 Kashmir Highway) and G -9 Office as well.
Our Problem /issues are as below:
1. Petrol Prices increased from 65 to 82 but Careem’s bonus/Gurantees/per KM fare decreased unfortunately. Prices are increasing Every Month so Per KM rate should be changed with respect to change in Price of Petrol on every month.
2. Faraway Bonus should be start from 1KM.
3. Rate Should be for KM Slab
For 1Km to 5 KM
For 5Km to 20 KM
For 20KM to 40 KM
For 40 KM onward
Waiting price should be high so that customer avoid unnecessary waiting.
4. Careem Percentage should be reduced from 20% to 10 % and must be FIXED.
5. Bonus and Guarantee Structure should be revised to compensate Captain/ Vendor and must be implemented for a Specific Period of time.
6. If 14 rides are mandatory, it should be in 24 hours- Remove 11 Hours restriction because working more than 8 hours is against human rights/labor laws
7. In case of software issue/problem in application, Careem is responsible to compensate that day Guarantee because it increase working hours of Captain which is against human rights.
8. There are allot of loop holes in ADMA (KM Calculation- Map Accuracy- Time Calculation) which ultimately effect Captain Earning and Weekly Bonus.
9. Trip Compensation amount/Toll Gates should be include in Captain Daily Earning.
10. Fines should be reversed because most of them are illogical/unfair and only to facilitate customers. . No Fine / No Blockage of captain Without Proper Evidence and Verifications. In case of any issue at least 1-3 warning for Captains before impose of fine/Blockage via Email and he should must have the right to appeal for it.
11. Help Line Number Should be FREE… FREEE FREEEEEE
12. Careem Blocked so many Captains due to Payment, Kindly unblock them and allow them to pay at least 3000/- per week from that Payable amount. It will help Careem in recovering the amount as well as allows captain to work with Careem.
13. Give us a Permanent Email Address and Contact number from Islamabad office so that one of our designated Captain will coordinate you for resolution of Captains issue.
14. Careem should take responsibility of Fares, if Passenger do not Pay, Careem is responsible to pay each and every rupee to Captain.
15. Define a Map for Captain to Work after 8:00PM. Which is very important for safety and Security of Captains.
16. There should be 2 Destination Rides in a Day, it will help captain to work freely.
We are in business with Careem together overcoming hurdles and challenges together. At the time of Careem’s launch in Islamabad, the Petrol Price was less than Rs.62.77/Litter and Careem’s Fare was Per Kilometer Rs.13, Per Minute Rs. 6 and Base Fare Rs.120. Now the Petrol Price is Rs. 81.53/Litter but Careem’s have been slashed the fare several times despite continuous rise in Petrol Prices and nowadays Careem Fare is Per Kilometer Rs.7.00, Per Minute Rs. 2 and Base Fare Rs.85. Even Careem rubbed salt on our wounds by reducing the bonuses/Guarantees for Vendor and Captains
There has been an undeniable rise in prices of fuel that we use and allied service charges like repair and maintenance of cars have been soaring up along with living expenses. All these have led to constant lowering of Vendor Captain’s income.
Pl recalculate petrol price hike… its 25% not 6% in last 6 months…..Very very pathetic RESPONSE from CAREEM…
..trip fares must be increased 30% not 10%..
