Australia to Host the Next T20 World Cup

Australia will be hosting the World T20 to be held in 2020. The decision was announced in a press conference that was attended by Steve Smith, Australia’s men’s cricket team captain and their women’s team captain Meg Lanning.

David Peever, Cricket Australia chairman said:

Australia is extremely privileged to be hosting the ICC World T20 tournaments in 2020.

Full fixture details will be announced later, however, ICC did announce a brief schedule which is as follows.

World Cup Schedule

The cricketing summer of 2020 will start with the women’s T20 World Cup. Women’s World T20 will kick off from 21st February and end on 8th March 2020.

Men’s Cup will commence in the later stages of the year beginning from 18th October and concluding on 15th November, 2020.

A total of 10 teams will be participating in Women’s World T20 while 16 nations will take part in Men’s T20 World Cup.

Hosting Cities

Following cities of Australia will host the T20 cricket teams in 2020.

  • Melbourne
  • Adelaide
  • Brisbane
  • Canbera
  • Geelong
  • Hobart
  • Perth
  • Sydney

Melbourne Cricket Ground will be hosting finals of both tournaments further cementing its place as a cricket hub of Australia. Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG) will host the women’s semi-finals on consecutive days. Men’s semi-finals will be played at two different venues, one at Adelaide Oval and the other at SCG.

Australia’s women’s team has an extraordinary record in T20 World Cups. They have won 3 out 5 tournaments played so far. Australia’s men’s team on the other hand is struggling, reaching a World T20 final only once. Australia finished that tournament as runner-ups losing to arch-rivals England in 2010.

Both men’s and women’s teams of West Indies are currently defending champions of World T20 titles.

For women’s World T20 there will be two groups with 5 teams each and top 2 teams from each group will qualify for the semis. Teams will be fighting for these trophies;

Australia also hosted the Men’s ODI World Cup in 2015 and beat New Zealand in the final to claim the title.
