Applications Open for KP Civic Innovation Fellowship Program 2018

The KP Civic Innovation Fellowship is a 6 month program that is powered by the Code for Pakistan, the KP IT Board, and the World Bank. This Program is a great platform that brings together all the talented researchers, designers, community organizers, and developers under one roof to collaborate and build apps, inspire citizen engagement, improve government, and show how to be innovative in public services.

These apps can help solve problems in various public domains like healthcare, crime, disaster management, citizen engagement, transportation, traffic, education, etc.
The Fellowship Program consists of three key features:

  • Citizens and government working together, joining hands to solve problems.
  • Adopting user-centric, lean, and agile development methodologies.
  • Increasing civic engagement by creating innovative solutions in public services.

The first Fellowship program kick started on March 11, 2014 with 12 Fellows right after the Peshawar Civic Hackathon.

Due to success in the first year, KP Civic Innovation Fellowship was launched again on July 26, 2015 with 20 Fellows. They made tremendous strides in improving the governance. The challenging projects they worked on included:

  • An Android app for traffic wardens to report traffic incidents and a Web app to visualize the reports on a Google map, as well as a new token-based system for issuing new driver licenses.
  • An automated file management and approval system for the KP IT Board.
  • A web application for the Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) that is bringing efficiency to the process of provisioning relief funds to the needy by keeping records of casualties, cattle damage, and distributions to people in disaster-stricken areas.
  • A new website and content management system for PDMA to convey swift information to NGOs, journalists, and the public in disaster-affected areas.
  • An automated residence allocation and management system for the Establishment Division to improve efficiency and transparency of allotting residences to government employees based on merit.

The third cycle took place in 2017  in which 20 full time technologists were hired, who had expertise ranging from creating intricate animations to writing clean code.

The projects and government departments that the Fellows worked with are:

  • Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Information Technology Board (KPITB)- A web based Crowdfunding platform which would serve as a bridge between investors and startups emerging from the province.
  • Water and Sanitation Services Peshawar (WSSP) -An android based crowdsourced complaint system with a web based dashboard enabling the public to report hygiene and sanitation related issues in and around Peshawar and equipping the government department to respond effectively and efficiently to those complaints.
  • Directorate of Industries and Commerce – A web based file management and record digitization system which will replace the existing manual process and increase the efficiency with which societies, NGOs and madrassas can be registered and information can be updated.
  • Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Traffic Police – An android application containing 6 different modules including a complaint system, emergency contacts, traffic education, chalaan (ticketing), and driving license verification system.
  • Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Tourism Corporation – An information portal meant to help local and international tourists explore Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. This portal is to provide information ranging from famous spots to details about resorts, restaurants and events happening at a specific location.
