The new Islamabad Aiport is set to be inaugurated next month. However, we still don’t know what its official and final name will be.

A committee was formed by ex-Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif two weeks before he was disqualified to decide on the name of the new airport. This committee, which comprising of several ministers, recently met and suggested three names for the airport. Sources say that all the names were rejected by the Prime Minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi in the meeting ‘without any specific jusification’.

The committee members wanted to name the airport after someone who had played a major part in the Pakistan Movement. All members agreed on naming the airport after Liaquat Ali Khan considering his efforts for Pakistan. One minister told;
There were very strong arguments in support of Liaquat Ali Khan’s name, but it seems that the prime minister had come with a prepared mind.
Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) wanted the airport to have the same name of Benazir International Airport. However, this name was also not considered given its potential of misuse by politicians in the future. i
As of now, the airport doesn’t have an official name. Currently, CAA is using the “Islamabad International Aiport” term for work purposes.
The airport was initially announced to be inaugurated on 18th April. However, it hit yet another roadblock as its inauguration was delayed until May 3.
