Xiaomi Pocophone F1 is The True Flagship Killer of 2018

With the Mi 8, Xiaomi cemented the idea of offering a more premium flagship for cheap, yet PocoPhone F1 goes one step ahead and is even cheaper and brings even more features.

Enter Xiaomi’s latest Pocophone brand, with its new F1 flagship phone.

Design and Display

Xiaomi Pocophone F1

From the front, the phone looks unmistakably like the Mi 8. From the large bezel up top (which seems useless, considering the lack of sensors used for face unlock) to the iPhone look.

What sets it apart is its plastic body, which you don’t see on flagships in this day and age. It does have a fingerprint sensor on the back, so you don’t lose much on the design front. There’s also a Kevlar back edition that is only available with the 256GB storage variant which brings additional scratch resistance and better grip.

It has an 18:9 aspect ratio 6.2-inch Full HD+ IPS display, no OLED on this one, unfortunately.

Internals and Storage

Here’s where the F1 really shines, it sports a top-of-the-line Snapdragon 845 processor with 6 GB RAM and 64 GB of storage, expandable via a microSD card slot. Higher tiers bring 128GB and 256GB storage options.

On the software side it runs Android 8.1 Oreo with MIUI 9.6 for Poco onboard, so you’ll get the latest of Xiaomi’s homebrew UI on the Pocophone F1. The new Poco optimized UI looks more like the stock-based Nova Launcher than MIUI but underneath it boasts more or less the same amount of features. a MIUI 10 upgrade is expected in the coming days.

Cameras

The similarities with the Mi 8 (or rather Mi8 SE) don’t end with the display. The F1 has a similar 12+5 MP camera setup on the back with dual pixel autofocus and a LED flash.

Up front you get a 20 MP snapper with pixel binning tech, combining 4 pixels into one for enhanced image quality and lighting, improving your low light selfie shots.

Battery and Price

This is one of the things Pocophone F1 has going for it above the Mi 8, its 4,000 mAh battery. It should provide you with 10-12 hours of screen on time easily and supports Quick Charge 3 for quick top-ups. The fast charger is bundled with the phone at launch.

It’ll be available for $300 in India with 128GB and 256GB Kevlar variant coming in at $370 and $430. International availability is confirmed, but we don’t have a concrete launch date from Xiaomi yet. The company is expected to make an announcement for other markets on August 27th. Stay tuned for more updates.
