Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (PEMRA) has banned American TV channel Discovery Channel’s reality show ‘Naked and Afraid’ for its ‘highly obscene and vulgar content.’
A notice has been issued to the One World Alliance Pvt. Ltd. which has the marketing and distribution rights of the channel in Pakistan.
The notice mentions that the authority had to take action after receiving several complaints about the content of the show.
It says the show was banned from airing across Pakistan because its content is in extremely vulgar and ‘in violation of the laws of land and customs of Islamic society.’
“The programme titled “Naked and Afraid” aired by M/s One World Alliance Pvt. Ltd. (Discovery) is hereby prohibited under Section 27 of PEMRA (Amendment) Act 2007 and 2018 with immediate effect,” the two-page notice mentions.
It also warns the concerned authority to comply with the order or legal action shall be initiated under Section 29, 30 and 33 of PEMRA Act 2007 and 2018.
Naked and Afraid is Discovery’s survival show. In every season of the show, two complete strangers, usually a man and a woman are stranded in a dangerous, desolate location.
There, they survive without food or water or even clothes. Each episode is the story of their adventures as they attempt to survive on their own.
The reality show was a massive hit in its inaugural season across the US in 2013 with a 9.1 IMDB rating. Since then, it has gradually gone down a bit with the third season being ranked at 8.4.
