FBR Chairman Likely to be Replaced Soon: Reports

The Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) is expected to see a reshuffling in upper management. Rumors suggest that FBR Chairman Shabbar Zaidi is likely to be replaced by one of the following names:

  • Jahanzeb Khan – Former Chairman FBR
  • Younus Dagha – Former Secretary Finance
  • Seema Shakil – Member Inland Revenue Operation
  • Javed Ghani – Member Policy Customs
  • Mujtaba Memon – Additional Secretary Finance

According to the media reports, the decision hasn’t been finalized yet, however, Prime Minister Imran Khan wants to promote Zaidi to either Special Advisor to the Prime Minister on Revenue or Minister of State for Revenue considering the slots have been vacant following Hammad Azhar’s appointment as a State Minister.

Sources say that the Federal Cabinet is likely to add two more members, and it is highly likely that Zaidi can be one of them.

Answering a question related to possible appointment as a minister, Zaidi left it for Imran Khan to decide.

I don’t want to comment. Prime Minister Imran Khan will decide.

The business community is reportedly not happy with Zaidi considering the tax machinery’s measures for broadening the tax base, however, this is probably not the main reason for his transfer.

There are also reports of reshuffling of some top officers in the FBR, with Zaidi saying that they are planning for the long-term.

We are making long-term plans and will not transfer anyone on an ad-hoc basis.

The changes, however, are likely to take place after the final decision on Zaidi’s replacement.

  • So much for their claims of going after tax evaders. The tax evaders are getting the taxman transferred!

  • The sooner the better!
otherwise he is going to destroy the sunken ship of economy.

  • No he will not be changed. All this is being propagated by those having vested interest and those who want turmoil in the country to save their skin.
