Wedding Hall Owners Refuse to Close Banquets From 20 Nov

Banquet and marriage hall owners have refused to implement the government’s decision to close wedding halls from 20 November onwards.

Reacting to the National Command Operations Center’s (NCOC) announcement a week ago about the closure of wedding halls from 20 November to 31 January because of the spread of the coronavirus, the Banquet and Halls Association (BHA) declared that they would prefer going to jail instead of implementing the said decision.

“We are ready to go to jail but we will not close the wedding halls,” its President, Shariq Memon, responded.

Addressing a press conference in Karachi, Memon said that the halls had been reopened under strict standard operating procedures (SOPs) after seven-month-long closure.

He added that the owners are yet to recover from the substantial financial losses that they incurred during the countrywide coronavirus lockdown and that they reject the government’s reimposition of restrictions.

“If marriage halls were closed again, unemployment will increase,” Memon said.

Memon highlighted that the common man is not arranging wedding ceremonies of more than 250 attendees due to the current situation, and requested Prime Minister Imran Khan to reverse this decision.
