The Lahore High Court (LHC) has directed the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) to file a case against Google and Wikipedia for offensive content.
While hearing a petition for the removal of offensive content from the Internet, the LHC Chief Justice, Qasim Khan, suggested that the agency should file a case against Google for the same, if possible.
He inquired how the FIA would react to a person spreading offensive content from abroad. The government’s lawyer responded that the agency was investigating the cases.

Justice Qasim retorted, “Isn’t it the job of the government to enforce all the laws in the country? What kind of Riyasat-e-Madina are we living in that we can’t even fulfill our basic requirements?”
He then suggested that the FIA should form a special wing to monitor and remove offensive content online.
While reprimanding the government for being negligent, Justice Qasim said that it should either remove all offensive content, shut the system down, or declare that it will not take any action against the concern.

He asked whether the FIA is authorized to book Google and Wikipedia.
After issuing summons for the DG FIA and other officials, the LHC has adjourned the hearing until 30 December.
Prior to this, the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) had issued notices to Google Inc. and Wikipedia on 25 December for ‘disseminating sacrilegious content through the platforms’.
