New Zealand captain, Kane Williamson, appreciated the resilience of the Pakistan batsmen in the fourth innings of the first Test match. Pakistan managed to put on a strong comeback on the last day of the match but ultimately fell short with only over four overs left in the play.
Williamson praised the efforts of Mohammad Rizwan and Fawad Alam to stage a comeback. He said that he was happy to be a part of the winning side in what he claimed was a brilliant game.

“Both teams put their best foot forward and Pakistan was incredibly resilient in that second innings, but the boys kept coming. A huge effort by the bowlers to get us across the line.”
Williamson believes Rizwan’s run-out in the first innings was a significant moment in the match. Rizwan and Faheem Ashraf put on a 107-run stand in the first innings. They looked set to put on a big total when Rizwan was run-out by a direct throw by Mitch Santner.
Pakistan entered the final day on 71/3 with little chance of rescuing the Test match. Fawad Alam scored a magnificent century, and the stand-in captain, Mohammad Rizwan, scored yet another half-century to get Pakistan within touching distance of salvaging a draw.

Kiwi all-rounder, Mitch Santner, picked up two wickets in the final few overs to help New Zealand win the first Test match. The victory helped New Zealand to become the number one Test side in the world.
Williamson himself has had an amazing last month of the year. He scored a double century against West Indies in the first Test match before getting leave for the birth of his first child. Williamson returned to the T20I side, scoring a half-century. He then scored a century against Pakistan in the first innings of the Test and led New Zealand to the number one ranking for the first time in their history.
