Alarms Raised as Pakistan Reports 2 New Cases of Mutated COVID-19

Pakistan has confirmed two more cases of the new coronavirus strain that was detected in the UK in December last year, taking the country’s tally of cases due to the mutated virus to 5.

The Sindh Health Department (SHD) had taken samples of 12 passengers who recently returned from the UK, of which six had tested positive for Coronavirus. So far, five out of the six positive samples sent for further testing have shown similarity with the mutated UK COVID-19 strain.

SHD has noted that the concerned authorities have traced close contacts of these two new cases and isolated them to stem the transmission of the new strain. The three previous cases and their close contacts have already been quarantined by the SHD.

The highly infectious mutated Coronavirus strain that was first detected in southern parts of England in early December last year has now transmitted to more than 50 countries.

Almost all countries around the world placed travel restrictions on the UK after the British government announced the detection of the new variant of coronavirus.

Recently, British Prime Minister, Boris Johnson, also imposed a tier-4 level of restrictions to curb the transmission of the new viral strain.
