A recent news report revealed that the Engineering Development Board (EDB) is displeased with the ‘Import-Only’ business model of certain local car dealers because frequent vehicle imports have upset the balance of the economy at both the sectoral and state levels
General Manager of EDB, Asim Ayaz, echoed the concerns saying that certain car dealers have been importing cars to sell them at huge profit margins for many years. He added that there is no law that can prevent dealers from doing so, and cited the local distributors of BMW and Audi as examples.

Ayaz said that the EDB is working to resolve the issue. While sharing his plan, he said,
People need to be vigilant themselves before buying a car. The most we could do is put a list of companies licensed by the EDB for local manufacturing as local manufacturers build an after-sales service network too.
The Automotive Development Policy (ADP) 2016-21 had been intended to initiate a paradigm shift whereby new automakers could enter into the market.

The Pakistani market had a considerable number of new entrants in 2020, and with the ADP 2016-21 about to expire in a few months, more new players are reportedly on the way.
Reports also suggest that the government aims to formulate a new policy for the auto-sector to enhance its growth. The new Electric Vehicle (EV) policy has also encouraged numerous automakers to start EV product lines in Pakistan.
With these developments underway, the imported vehicle dealers must prepare themselves to deal with a tough situation.
