Sindh’s Gas Reserves Will Only Last 12 Years: Minister

Sindh’s Minister for Energy, Imtiaz Ahmed Sheikh revealed on Tuesday that Sindh’s gas reserves are only going to last 12 years while its oil reserves are also on the decline.

While responding to various written and supplementary questions during Question Hour on Energy Department in the Sindh Assembly, the minister said that the gas available in Sindh will only last for another 12 to 15 years while its oil reserves will be available for 15 to 20 years.

The minister claimed that Sindh’s gas was being “plundered” and it is supplied to Sui Northern Gas Pipelines Limited (SNGPL) through Sindh’s pipelines.

He said that although the matter of the regulation of the oil and gas reserves lies with the federation, the constitution gives the province from where the gas originates the right to use it first.

He said, “We also wrote letters to the federal ministers. No attention is being paid to any article of the constitution”.

“Sindh has 2,600 million cubic feet of daily gas. We say give us our gas first and whatever is left, give it to whoever wants it. The Chief Minister of Sindh has written a letter to the Prime Minister in this regard because the citizens of Sindh are worried. We are tired of repeatedly telling the federation,” he added.
