All You Need to Know About Motorola’s Upcoming Top Of The Line Edge S Smartphone

Motorola’s next Edge phone, the Edge S, is set to launch later today. The company launched its first Edge series smartphones in April 2020 just after a hiatus of four years. Motorola Edge was more of an upper mid-range handset while the Edge+ was launched as a flagship touting Snapdragon 865 SoC, 90 Hz display, and a 108 MP camera setup.

Motorola Edge S poster leaks, confirms back design once again

As far as the impending Motorola Edge S is concerned, last week, the company announced that the handset will break covers on 26th January 2021 at 11:30 UTC. The virtual event will be streamed online.

Here’s what we know about the smartphone.

Design and Display

Earlier this month, official-looking renders of the Motorola Edge S surfaced on the internet revealing that the handset will look a lot like the Motorola Edge+ from the front. It will come with a tiny punch hole in the center with a waterfall display. The bezels are non-existent on all sides while the chassis extends slightly in the corners to hold onto the display.

The smartphone is expected to feature a 6.7-inch FHD+ (1080p) display with a rather odd 105 Hz refresh rate. This refresh rate will most likely be marketed as 90 Hz.

Internals and Storage

Along with revealing the launch date for the Motorola Edge S, last week the company also announced that the handset will be powered by the all-new Snapdragon 870. The new chipset by Qualcomm comes with the fastest clock speed. It features the Kryo 585 (a reworked Cortex-A77) running at up to 3.2GHz. The Mobile platform is built on TSMC’s 7nm process and has 8 cores – the reworked Cortex A77, three Cortex-A77 running at a slower speed, and 4 Cortex-A55 for efficiency.

The SoC will be accompanied by 8 GB or 12 GB RAM and 256 Gb onboard storage. On the software front, the handset will run Android 11.

Cameras

Unfortunately, there is not a lot of information regarding the cameras that the handset will feature. Some leaks reveal that the handset will come with a dual sensor system for selfies and a quad-sensor system on the back. However, this does not corroborate the official-looking renders mentioned above. Moreover, the source of these leaks has not been authenticated. Other leakers are of the opinion that the handset will feature a 64 MP camera system on the back.

Battery and Pricing

A few leaks have surfaced regarding the battery sizes of the impending smartphone but none from reputable leakers so we can’t say anything for sure.

As far as the price of the handset is concerned, according to a report by Tech Radar, it will cost somewhere around $700 – $800.
