University of Agriculture Faisalabad Develops Fabric From Hemp

Researchers at the University of Agriculture Faisalabad (UAF) have developed fabric from hemp, a variety of the Cannabis Sativa plant species that is grown specifically for industrial use.

In this regard, UAF and a renowned textile group have signed an agreement for the large-scale production of hemp fabric.

According to Chairman Fabric and Textile Department at UAF, Dr. Asad, although cannabis and hemp come from the same plant, the latter does not contain toxic contents and is purely used for industrial use.

During an interview with a local news channel, Dr. Asad said that hemp fabric is better, stronger, and more durable than cotton fabric in every way.

Dr. Asad noted that hemp consumes less water than cotton. It does not need any pesticides to grow and instead, it enriches the soil it is grown on.

He added that hemp requires about half the territory of cotton to produce a ton of finished textiles.
